The lineup builder

Build practice lineups by hand, from favorites or with AI recommendations, publish them to athletes and review past lineups.

Who this is for: coaches who set practice lineups, and athletes who want to know where to find theirs. Permission required: Set Practice Lineups to build and publish lineups; Practice Communications to message athletes about practices; none to view your own lineup.

The lineup builder puts the athletes who are attending a practice into boats and seats. It shows each boat's rigging, each athlete's attendance and compliance, the forecast and the practice plan in one place. When the lineups are ready you publish them, and athletes can see their boat and seat.

Open the lineup builder

  1. Go to Practices → Lineups. The Upcoming tab lists upcoming practices.
  2. Select Set Lineups for a practice with no lineups yet, or View / Modify Lineups to change existing ones.

You can also select Create Lineups on a practice in Practices → Manage.

Tab What it is for
Lineups Add boats and place athletes in seats.
Attendees Add or remove athletes and handle attendance change requests. See Attendance.
Volunteers Volunteers signed up for the practice.
Practice Plan Write or edit the plan athletes see.
Compliance Athletes' compliance status. See USRowing & SafeSport compliance.
Weather The forecast for the practice, when one is available.
Chat The practice chat. See Chat.

Build lineups by hand

  1. On the Lineups tab, choose a boat from the boat list. Boats are grouped by hull type and show their weight range.
  2. Select a seat in the boat card and choose an athlete. Only athletes who are attending and not already in a boat are offered.
  3. Repeat for each seat, including Coxswain where the boat has one.
  4. Assign a coach to the boat if you want one listed.
  5. To start over on a boat, select Remove Boat. Clear all lineups removes every boat.

Tick Hide Not Attending to show only the athletes who are coming.

Tip: Only boats that are available for the practice are offered. Boats reserved for the practice on the Equipment tab are kept for you; see Creating & managing practices.

Rigging and seat sides

Each seat in a boat card is colored by how that seat is rigged, so you can put athletes on their side.

Color Seat rigging
Green Starboard
Red Port
Blue Sculling
Grey Not set

Select View Rigging on a boat card to open the boat in the equipment inventory, where its rigging is set. See Your inventory. Athletes rate their own side and seat skills under My Profile → Preferences, and coaches can open an athlete's profile from the lineup.

Favorite lineups

Save a crew you use often, then reuse it at a later practice.

  1. On a boat card, select the favorite (star) button, Favorite this lineup.
  2. Enter a Favorite name and choose Who can use this favorite: Personal - only me or Club - every coach in the organization.
  3. To use one, select Favorite Lineups and pick a favorite.
Filter Options
Show Only lineups possible for this practice or All favorite lineups
Favorites Club and personal favorites or My personal favorites only

A favorite can only be used when every athlete in it is attending and not already in a boat. If the original boat is not available you can choose another boat of the same size.

AI lineup recommendations

  1. Select Recommend Lineups.
  2. Describe what you want under What do you want from these lineups? and pick a Lineup Focus, such as Similar Experience, Similar Age, Similar Weight, Experimentation or Fastest Boat Speeds.
  3. Set Coaches available, Gender constraints, whether to use Non-compliant athletes, and any Coxswain rotation.
  4. Choose what happens When the rotation list runs out: Leave the remaining coxswain seats vacant, Rotate: fill them with whoever has gone the longest without coxing, or Auto-assign the best available coxswains.
  5. Review each recommended boat and its reason, then select Accept on the ones you want.

Recommendations only use attending athletes and available boats. Nothing is added to the lineups until you accept a boat, and you can still edit accepted boats by hand.

Tip: Recommendations are a starting point. Always check them before you publish.

Publish lineups

  1. When the lineups are ready, select Publish Lineups and confirm.
  2. Attending athletes can now see their lineup. Athletes who opted in to lineup emails or texts are notified.

You can keep editing after publishing. To message athletes about a practice, use Send Message on the Upcoming tab of Practices → Lineups (needs Practice Communications).

Where athletes see their lineup

  • The upcoming practice card on their Dashboard, which shows their boat and seat.
  • The lineup email, if they chose I want to receive these emails for Upcoming practice lineups email under My Profile → Preferences. See My Profile, Preferences & Notifications.
  • The mobile app.

Past lineups

Open Practices → Lineups and select the Past tab. For each past practice you can open Lineups (a read-only view with attendees, practice plan and weather), use Send Email, and open Survey Results. See Coaching notes & post-practice surveys.
