Tools

Free public tools for rowers — the USRowing Age & Handicap Calculator and the rowing shell Serial Number Decoder.

Who this is for: anyone — coaches, coxswains, masters rowers and equipment managers. Permission required: none. The tools are public pages; you do not need to sign in or belong to an organization.

Boathouse Connect publishes two small tools on its public website. Open them from the Tools menu at the top of boathouseconnect.com, or go straight to the links below. They run in your browser and nothing you enter is saved.

Age & Handicap Calculator

The Age & Handicap Calculator works out a masters crew's average age, its USRowing age category, and the handicap in seconds for each boat class.

Use it

  1. Choose the Racing Distance, from 500 Meters to 6,000 Meters in 500-meter steps.
  2. Enter each athlete's age in Athlete #1 Age through Athlete #8 Age. Leave unused rows empty.
  3. Click Calculate. The results update whenever you change a value.

If you only know the crew's average age, enter it in Athlete #1 Age and leave the others empty.

Result Meaning
Average Age The average of the ages entered, rounded down to a whole year.
Age Bracket The age category for that average (see below).
Distance The racing distance you chose.
Handicaps (in seconds) Three values: 1x's and 2-'s, 2x's and 4+/-'s, and 8+'s and 4x's.

Age categories by average age:

Category Average age Category Average age
AA under 27 F 60–64
A 27–35 G 65–69
B 36–42 H 70–74
C 43–49 I 75–79
D 50–54 J 80–84
E 55–59 K 85 and over

How the handicap is worked out

Crews with an average age under 29 get no handicap. Otherwise the calculator uses:

handicap (seconds) = (average age − 27)² × boat factor × (distance in meters ÷ 1,000)

Boats Factor
1x and 2- 0.0250
2x, 4+ and 4- 0.0216
8+ and 4x 0.0200

The result is rounded to one decimal place. Always check the handicap rules of the regatta you are entering; some events publish their own tables.

Serial Number Decoder

The Serial Number Decoder reads the serial number (Hull Identification Number, or HIN) stamped on a rowing shell and tells you what it can about the boat. It is useful when adding older boats to your inventory or checking a used boat before buying it.

Use it

  1. Choose the Manufacturer: Vespoli, Pocock, Hudson, Peinert, Van Dusen (Composite Engineering), WinTech, Kaschper, Resolute, Fluidesign, Maas, Swift Racing, or Other (Standard USCG HIN).
  2. Type the Serial Number (HIN) exactly as it appears on the hull. Spaces and punctuation are ignored.
  3. Click Decode.

Read the results

Field What it shows
Manufacturer The builder, from the manufacturer code where the number has one.
Hull Type / Size The hull model, where the builder encodes it.
Hull Number The builder's sequence number for the hull.
Year / Month of Production When the hull was built (and the model year, for standard HINs).
Average Crew Weight Range The rated crew weight for that hull, where known.
Notes How the number was decoded, and any caveats.

Vespoli, Pocock, Hudson, Peinert and Van Dusen numbers are decoded with those builders' own serial-number patterns, so they can return hull type and crew weight. For the other builders, and for Hudson and Peinert numbers that do not match the builder pattern, the tool reads the standard 12-character USCG HIN (three-letter manufacturer code, five-character hull number, production month and year, and model year). Standard HINs do not include hull type or crew weight; contact the builder with the serial number for those.

For WinTech, Kaschper, Resolute, Fluidesign, Maas, Swift Racing, Hudson and Peinert you can leave off the three-letter manufacturer code; the decoder adds the right one for you.

FAQ

The decoder says "Unable to decode". Why? The number does not match the format for the manufacturer you picked. Check the manufacturer and look for misread characters such as 0/O or 1/I. Boats built before November 1972 were not required to carry a HIN at all.

Do I need a Boathouse Connect account to use these tools? No. Both tools are free and public.

Can I save the results to a boat in our inventory? Not automatically. Copy the details you need into the boat's record under Equipment → All Equipment.

Why does a crew in category A get no handicap? The calculator only applies a handicap when the average age is 29 or older, so the youngest A crews race without one.
